Profiles

Antonio Alcalá
Antonio Alcalá graduated from Yale University with a BA in history and from the Yale School of Art with an MFA in graphic design opening Studio A in 1988. Since then his studio has won awards of excellence in design from local, national and international design institutions including AIGA, Print, Communication Arts and Graphis. His clients include: the National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Museum of Women in the Arts, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Postal Museum, The Phillips Collection, The Textile Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. Alcalá is an adjunct faculty member of MICA’s MFA graphic design program and is also responsible for the design of US postage stamps as an art director for the United States Postal Service. In 2011, Alcalá was nominated for two National Design Awards from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. His work is represented in the AIGA Design Archives, the National Postal Museum, and the Library of Congress Permanent Collection of Graphic Design.
Maribel O. Gray
Dr. Maribel O. Gray entered the field of graphic design as a second career. She graduated with a BFA in graphic design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design and joined Studio A in 2013. From 2013–2016, she was also an adjunct faculty member at the Corcoran. Prior to becoming a designer, she worked as an attending emergency physician at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. She obtained her BA in chemistry at Goucher College, MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine, MPH in international health at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, and completed residency training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC. Although her primary interests are web design, user experience, and user interaction design, Maribel is also a printmaker whose work has been included in several juried exhibitions.
Helen McNiell
Helen McNiell hails from a small Tennessee town near the Smoky Mountains. Growing up as the daughter of a college history professor and a public school administrator, she dreamed of being an author and illustrator of children’s books. McNiell graduated from the Atlanta College of Art at the High Museum (now SCAD) with a BFA in graphic design. After working for Time-Life, Helen joined Studio A as a Partner in 1998. She enjoys publication, book, and exhibition design because the process is like assembling a giant puzzle and the subject matter tends to be so interesting. Helen lives in Old Town, Alexandria with her husband, two daughters, and two cats.
Marti Davila
Marti has a BFA in graphic design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. She began her career at Studio A as a summer intern, and then as a full-time designer upon graduation. She developed a love for beautiful typography and book design at Studio A, and then continued refining her craft as an art director at various studios in the DC design community. Twenty years later, she is back at Studio A doing what she loves. When she is not being creative, she likes going to ‘80s New Wave concerts with her husband and enjoys hanging out with their three Boston Terriers.
